The Financial Planning Coalition is a collaboration of Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards (CFP Board), the Financial Planning Association® (FPA®) and the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) – the leading national organizations representing the development and advancement of the financial planning profession. Together, the Coalition seeks to educate policymakers about the financial planning profession, to advocate for policy measures that ensure financial planning services are delivered in the best interests of the public, and to enable the public to identify trustworthy financial advisers.

Financial planning is the process through which consumers determine and achieve life goals through proper management of their financial resources. As consumers continue to bear ever-increasing responsibility for managing their everyday financial affairs while also preparing for retirement, financial planning has become essential to the financial well-being of all Americans.

An unfortunate consequence of the most recent financial crisis is that many Americans have lost trust in the financial services industry, with research finding financial services to be the least trusted industry globally. Consumers are also confused by the numerous categories of financial advisers, not to mention the more than 140 different professional designations and titles used by professionals providing financial planning services. To further complicate this confusing landscape, the financial planning profession currently is not regulated at either the federal or state levels, leaving consumers exposed to potential risk and abuse.

Through the Financial Planning Coalition, its member organizations work together to educate and advise policymakers on ways to increase consumer and investor protection in financial planning.

The Coalition organizations, individually and collectively, support public policy initiatives to achieve the following objectives:

  • Financial planning services are delivered to the public with fiduciary accountability and transparency, while always serving the client’s best interests.
  • Financial planning services are appropriately regulated to identify professionals who meet stringent professional qualification standards, including examination, education, experience and ethics, as demonstrated by holding the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) certification.
  • The public can easily identify trusted financial planners whose business practices incorporate these high professional standards.
